| Kelly Dougherty: “Our lives weren’t important compared to profits”
That was kind of another realization for me, which I did understand in Iraq to a certain extent--that our lives were really not important when compared to corporate profits and the U.S. gaining dominance in the Middle East. In the convoy escorts, a lot of times, trucks would break down on the side of the road, or get stuck in the mud, or get into an accident. So the driver would go on with the convoy, and leave the vehicle. Almost every time, it was near where there were Iraqi people. They would come around and try to take something from the trucks, because they were living in poverty and could probably sell it or use it somehow. So we would have to go and act as crowd control and keep them back. We had rubber bullets, concussion grenades and beanbag shotgun shells. And we used those to keep the Iraqi people from the supposed U.S.

ALDI to open Ararat store
Ararat Rural City Council approved a planning permit at last week's meeting, giving the green light for Aldi to move forward with its plans to establish a supermarket on the old Sunicrust Bakery site in Moore Street Ararat. The layout of the development will provide for a building of 1450 square metres, car parking for 70 vehicles, upgrading of the road shoulder in Moore Street for parking and landscaping, incorporating retaining walls and signages on the building and pole signs. No objections were received to the planning permit, however, one submission was received from Jerram Auto Parts and Electronic Centre. The business's concern was in relation to maintaining access along the rear laneway during construction of the development. Council has addressed this concern by including a condition in the permit which requires access along the rear laneway to be maintained during the construction of the works.
Health Ministry Puts Fast Food Under Close Scrutiny
BATU PAHAT, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry will meet non-governmental organisation (NGO) representatives to work on a campaign to educate the public on the pros and cons of fast food. Its Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said the meeting will be held immediately after the Chinese New Year holiday as the ministry was concerned with the current lifestyle of Malaysians and their fast food eating habits. He said the ministry welcomed the call made by the NGOs, particularly the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association and the Penang Consumers Association, to stop fast food advertisements in the local media. "A meeting will be held to find the best method to educate the public to avoid fast food consumption at the early age," he told reporters after a Chinese New Year Celebration, organised by Batu Pahat MCA, here last night.
