Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce - From the CEO

Imagine my surprise when a banker recently reported a lack of interest in targeting the hospitality related companies on Cape Cod. Instead, the banker wanted to target small businesses in the region. I didnt realize they were so different. In fact, what businesses of all types needs is the same. Good customer service, good market info and knowing who their customer is, smart marketing and a laundry list of hiring the right people, getting financing, effectively communicating and keeping staff. These needs are one of the driving reasons behind BizWiz. This years event just happens to have a bent toward the hospitality industry boasting a foodie theme dubbed Recipe for Success. So you dont think you need to be there because its related to our visitor industry? Heres an exercise for you.Try to think of a business that isnt impacted by tourists.

FDA Warns Migraine Medicine Makers

The government said Thursday it had warned the world's largest maker of generic drugs and 19 other companies that they are illegally selling migraine medicines without federal approval.

The Food and Drug Administration said the 20 warning letters were part of an effort to halt the marketing of unapproved and potentially dangerous drugs. The goal is to get the unapproved drugs off the market, agency officials said. The manufacturers could seek agency approval for the products.

The prescription migraine treatments contain a drug called ergotamine tartrate. Ergotamine is derived from a rye fungus called ergot, from which a separate drug, the illegal hallucinogen LSD, also can be synthesized. Ergotamine is a vasoconstricting drug, meaning it narrows the blood vessels when taken.

Tests show no signs of toxins in dog food

Test results from laboratories at Texas A&M University and Purina show there no connection between Beneful dog food and the mysterious deaths of two Huntsville dogs. The canine companions of Janet Rambeck and Robert Barley died of similar causes the last weekend in January. When Rambeck discovered both their dogs died just days after eating Beneful dried dog food bought from Wal-Mart at about the same time, Rambeck decided to send the food off for testing by both Purina and Texas A&M. Rambeck and Barley weren't alone, though. Pet products Web-site DoggyBling.com had reported nearly 20 other cases of dogs dying under nearly identical circumstances and symptoms. Results from both tests came back showing no signs of abnormalities within the food. Purina released the following statement regarding their test results.

Vitamin antioxidant supplements do not benefit

Cancer Research UK has said that the "jury is still out" on the health benefits of vitamin supplements following research saying that some may be associated with reduced lifespan.

Researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark reviewed previous studies of the effect of long-term vitamin supplement use on health. It found that in 47 trials with 180,938 participants, people who took antioxidant supplements (beta carotene, vitamins A, E and C) were found to have a slightly higher chance of dying prematurely than those who were not taking the supplements. "Vitamin supplements do not seem to have the same benefits as getting naturally-occurring vitamins in your food," said Dr Kat Arney of Cancer Research UK. "Although the jury is still out on the benefits of vitamin supplements, this research raises the possibility that they could actually cause harm in the long term.
