I know a lot about gaining and losing weight and have spent much of my life trying to diet. Ive had some successes, but, in time, I usually put most of what Ive lost back on. Thats because I like to eat and associate good food with fun and good times. About two years ago, I decided to try to follow a friends example and change some of my eating habits. I also started walking about two miles a day. I was beginning to take off some pounds. Then my doctors told me I had either suffered two mini strokes or two spasms that kept the blood from circulating to my brain. Either way, it frightened me. When I was able, I started to walk again and chose food that was fat free or low in fat and cholesterol. My weight continued to go down but has held pretty steady for at least a year.
Maple bacon doughnut no help in a marathon
Mmmm bacon. Goes well with just about anything, doesn't it. One of the sweetest bacon applications I've heard about is the maple bacon doughnut offered by Portland's world famous Voodoo Doughnut shop. I've never actually tried one of these babies - essentially maple logs with slices of bacon adhered to the top - but you just know it's got to be good. Also, fyi, Voodoo serves apple fritters as big as your head, and the management performs weddings and offers Swahili lessons on Monday nights. As excited as I am about bacon, I'm not so pumped about gourmet bacon. This includes extra-thick bacon or anything covered in pepper or smoked with apple wood. I just can't figure out why they went and messed with such a good thing. They've pulled off the impossible - they've screwed up bacon.
REO Horror Story: The Family Pet
The REO Horror story of Richard Williams, REO director with Annalee's Realty in Ohio, begins with a distressed property and a family that refused to give up. "We tried everything including cash for keys," said Richard. "But, these folks just wouldn't leave."Unfortunately, when the family did leave, they left a few precious belongings behind – namely their family pets. The pets, a few of which died of starvation, were not found until Richard checked on the property."We found an unlocked window," remembers Richard. "And, I started to put my son through the window so we could check inside the home. A few seconds later, my son shouted 'there's a dog in here.' " The neglected family dog, which is part pit bull, had been starved within days of his life. The sad thing for Richard was finding a few other pets that had already died. When a police officer arrived on the scene to file an animal cruelty report, he granted Richard's family an early Christmas present by declaring the dog -- there's.
For tried and true recipes, check out those church fund-raiser ...
Winter is a great time of year to research new recipes and stock up ideas for those special events, dinners and such we will be hosting when the thaw hits. I'll often check out ideas on the Internet, at my local public library, and in bookstores but I'll admit that some of the most innovative, down to earth recipes out there come from those spiral bound cookbooks that are published as fund-raisers for churches in the area. I know all of you get giddy when one of those super chefs on the Food Network gives you a flashy presentation of how to stuff giant squid with pureed tiger shrimp and fresh shitake mushrooms. I mean let's get real. If I went in to my little hometown market and asked for some of the ingredients that those big city recipes called for, at the very least I'd get that look.
Prince Charles suggests McDonald's food should be banned
Prince Charles suggested Tuesday on a visit to the United Arab Emirates with his wife the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla that banning fast food cafes and restaurants, especially McDonald's, was crucial for improving people's diets, Sky News TV Channel reported. Talking to Nadi Tiara, nutritionist in Imperial College London Diabetes Center in Abu Dhabi, Charles said, "Have you got anywhere with McDonald's? Have you tried getting it banned? That's the key." The UAE are world's second nation to have the largest number of diabetics. More than 20% of population aged between 20 and 79 suffer from diabetes in this country. A McDonald's spokesman called the remark "disappointing". He said other members of the royal family "have probably got a more up-to-date picture of us". "This appears to be an off-the-cuff remark, in our opinion," she said.
Recipe: Basic Pie Pastry
1. Sift together the flours, sugar and salt. Put into a bowl or food processor. Add the pieces of shortening and butter; cut in by hand or use the pulse butter on the processor until large flakes are formed. Add cold water and work just until the dough begins to hold together. Transfer to a sheet of plastic wrap and form dough into a flat disk. Refrigerate at least an hour or overnight. 2. Lightly spray a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray and set aside. If dough has been refrigerated overnight, remove about 30 minutes before rolling. 3. Roll dough between lightly floured sheets of plastic wrap to a 14-inch circle. Remove top sheet of plastic and invert dough over pie pan. Use plastic to mold dough into the pan, then remove and discard. Crimp top edge of dough and chill until ready to fill.
