| Bears? Not here, not yet
It wasn't so very long ago that humankind was not the big dog in San Benito County. Until a little more than a century ago, even men mounted on horseback kept a watchful eye for the only animal capable of turning a day's ride into a horror show nightmare. Grizzly bears once padded through the mountains and valleys of San Benito County and the Central Coast. The last living example of Ursus arctos disappeared from California in the first years of the 20th Century, remaining only as an iconographic reminder of California's wilderness past on the state flag. When the first Spanish explorers began to traverse California, they encountered a place very different from the state we know today. Dead whales, castoffs from a population much larger than today's, littered the beaches.
Dog food doesn't taste that bad
With three days left in RRSP season, we're going to take a different tack. For weeks we've hammered away at the multiple reasons why 95% of the working population should make RRSP contributions. To recap, you get an up-front tax deduction, tax-sheltered growth of your investments and a way to create a down payment on a home or to build up a fund to return to school. For those whose incomes vary widely from year to year, RRSPs can be an income and tax-averaging vehicle and provide an emergency cash cushion if work dries up altogether. We even devoted a column to appeal to those in the underground economy, describing RRSPs as "a Swiss bank account with a kickback." .

North Korean women trafficked as brides WORLD BRIEFINGS
SEOUL -- Thousands of North Korean women fleeing famine in their homeland in recent years say they have been sold as "brides" to Chinese men, who often force them into backbreaking labor and subject them to constant fear, physical assault and sexual abuse. Women who were trafficked into China, lured by the promise of food and a decent living, described their experiences in an unprecedented series of interviews by Radio Free Asia's Korean service.
