Man charged with shoplifting after running from police

Shoppers in the Giant Food Store at the Camp Hill Shopping Center were interrupted at 4:21 p.m. yesterday when two store employees and a police officer tried to arrest a man they said was shoplifting.

Employees said the man stole $243 in video games and DVDs, and they tried unsuccessfully to hold the man for police. The man reached in his pocket for a knife, then ran from the store, shedding clothing along the way, police said.

Outside the store, the man crashed into a police car that an officer used to block his escape. The man dented the side of the cruiser, then ran onto South 32nd Street, where he fell and was caught by police.

Police charged Anthony Eugene Braxton, 28, of the 200 block of Reno Avenue, New Cumberland, with robbery, simple assault, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and false reports to police.

Think big when planning parties

The following review is by a reader who was given a cookbook from the Times. The included recipes were selected and prepared by the reader.

I found myself facing February with a number of entertaining opportunities. The Super Bowl was looming and this transplanted Hoosier felt obligated to host a gathering. This would be the most casual of events, paper plates and finger food. I was hosting an all-day stitch-in (cross stitchers & needlepointers) and serving lunch to my lady friends. Finally, I was having a nice dinner party (damask tablecloth and fine china). Hmmm, could this cookbook be the answer for such a variety of occasions? The answer is a resounding yes.

For the Super Bowl, I prepared guacamole, a cold sesame noodle salad and cheesy spinach-artichoke squares.

Every school, every Thursday / West Des Moines

After reading "The Chocolate Touch," students in Kristin Shell's third-grade class wondered what it would be like to eat the same food for an entire day, and decided to experiment. They each chose one food item to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Spaghetti, doughnuts, and chicken nuggets were among the food choices for the day.

Students in Abby Boruff's 4-year-old preschool class recently completed a unit on nursery rhymes. Students read a variety of rhymes throughout the unit. At the completion of the unit, they made a class book. Students selected their favorite nursery rhyme and drew a picture to go with the rhyme. The book will be shared with classmates upon completion.

Fifth-grade students culminated their science unit on electricity by creating electricity projects.

Arctic Ocean Gets a Nervous System

March 2, 2007 — Remote and often locked in ice, the Arctic Circle is one of the most variable, sensitive ecosystems on the planet. Now, several Norwegian institutions are joining forces to set up a network of sensors to monitor the underwater environment there and its renewable resources.

The network — piggybacked on oil pipelines, seafloor platforms, cables and research vessels — could yield some of the best data yet on even the smallest changes in the ecosystem.

The information will inform scientists about marine resources from fuel to food.

What are discretionary calories?

It's a nutritional given: You need a certain number of calories to keep your body functioning and to provide energy for physical activities, for everything from walking to breathing to a workout. If you eat more calories than you burn through exercise and other physical activities, then you will gain weight.

The health and nutritional center of the U.S. Department of Agriculture wants you to think of the calories you need for energy like money you have to spend. Each person has a total calorie "budget." This budget can be divided into "essentials" and "extras," just as your monetary budget or allowance is.

With a financial budget, the essentials are items like rent and food and the extras, or discretionary money, would be movies, vacations and such.

In a calorie budget, the "essentials" are the minimum calories required to meet your nutrient needs.

Sonic and the Secret Rings

For a while we thought Sonic was a goner, a blue hedgehog-shaped smear on the tarmac of gaming history. With Sonic Team's every attempted step forward, his scores plummeted down. Multiple characters exploring 3D environments? Say hello to the 70s. Big the Cat? It's the 60s for you. Sonic with guns? He's practically hibernating in a nest of 50s. With Secret Rings, the team has finally realised that the only way forwards is backwards and - not to come over too Riddler-like - in Sonic's case the only way backwards is forwards. At breakneck speeds.Essence of hog Filter him down into his purest form - the original Sonic on Mega Drive - and you'll find little more than the urge to move forwards. Speedily moving from the left of the screen to the right, Sonic was about distance covered and little else.
